Google Pixel Speaker Cleaning Guide (Pixel 6 through Pixel 9)
Pixel speakers have their own quirks — Adaptive Sound quirks, software-side fixes, and why Pixel 6 and 7 had that crackling problem. Full cleaning guide.
Pixel phones have an interesting relationship with speaker problems: some of what users perceive as hardware issues are actually software — Adaptive Sound misbehaving, firmware stereo tuning bugs, or system-level EQ changes after updates. That doesn't mean Pixel speakers don't get dirty. It does mean the cleaning routine for Pixel needs to include software checks the iPhone and Samsung routines don't.
This guide covers Pixel 6 through Pixel 9, including Pro and a-series variants.
What's different about Pixel speakers
Pixel phones, especially pre-Pixel 8 models, have relatively small speaker drivers compared to iPhone Pro Max or Samsung Galaxy S flagships. That means two practical consequences:
- Debris affects Pixel audio quality faster than larger-speaker phones.
- The voice coil heats faster during sustained playback, so you want shorter cleaning tone runs.
Pixel software also does more audio processing than iOS by default. Adaptive Sound, Now Playing, and the various accessibility EQ features all affect what comes out of the speaker. A speaker that sounds muffled on a Pixel might actually be a software issue.
Check the software first
Before any physical cleaning on a Pixel, run through these software checks:
- Disable Adaptive Sound. Settings → Sound → Adaptive Sound → Off. This alone clears some "muffled Pixel" complaints.
- Check the media volume separately from ring volume. Pixel treats them independently. It's possible to have a muffled-sounding phone simply because media is at 30% while ringer is at 100%.
- Look at accessibility audio settings. Settings → Accessibility → Audio → check for enabled mono audio or balance adjustments that might attenuate one channel.
- Check for pending system updates. Settings → System → System update. Pixel firmware affects audio tuning, and some updates have shipped noticeable audio quality changes.
- Restart the phone. Clears stuck audio routing. Especially important after using Bluetooth headphones.
If the speaker is still muffled after all of that, move to physical cleaning.
The Pixel cleaning routine
Standard cleaning with Pixel-specific adjustments:
- Max media volume. Not ring volume — check twice.
- Open the Adaptive Sound settings and disable it. You want to hear the unprocessed speaker during cleaning.
- Brush the bottom speaker grille with a soft-bristle toothbrush.
- Hold the phone speaker-down over a towel.
- Play a 165Hz cleaning tone for 20 seconds. Shorter than the iPhone routine because Pixel speakers heat faster.
- Wait 30 seconds, run another 20-second pulse.
- Test with a voice memo.
If audio is clean, re-enable Adaptive Sound if you want to keep it. If audio is still muffled, move to water diagnosis.
Water exposure on Pixel
Pixel 6, 7, 8, and 9 all have IP68 ratings. The eject pulse works the same as on other IP68 phones:
- Wipe the outside with a lint-free cloth.
- Hold the phone speaker-down.
- Play a 165Hz eject pulse for 15 seconds.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Repeat twice more.
- Air dry for 24 hours, no charging.
One Pixel-specific caveat: the speaker grille on Pixel 6 and 7 models is slightly recessed, which means water can pool in the grille depression rather than flowing out. After the eject pulse, tilt the phone at different angles briefly to let pooled water drain.
The Pixel 6 and 7 crackling story
Starting in late 2021, a significant number of Pixel 6 and 7 users reported speaker crackling, especially at specific frequencies. Google traced much of it to the stereo tuning firmware rather than hardware defects, and pushed updates that improved the situation.
If you have a Pixel 6 or 7 and hear crackling:
- Update to the latest system version.
- After the update, test a voice memo at moderate volume.
- If crackling persists only at high volume, it's likely voice-coil distortion from a worn-in speaker.
- If crackling persists at all volumes, clean the speaker thoroughly — sometimes dust accumulation produces what sounds like electrical crackling.
Some Pixel 6/7 units had genuine hardware issues. Google's repair service handles those. But many complaints turn out to be software after a proper update, so try that first.
Pixel Fold-specific routine
The Pixel Fold has speakers at both the top of the cover display and the bottom of the cover display, plus a separate set that's active when the device is unfolded.
Cleaning:
- Unfold the device fully.
- Run the software checks listed above.
- Brush both the cover display speaker grilles and the inner display speaker grille.
- Hold the device unfolded, speakers facing down.
- Play a 165Hz cleaning tone for 30 seconds.
- Fold and unfold the device twice to redistribute debris.
- Run another 20-second pulse.
Pixel Fold collects hinge debris in the same way Samsung's Z Fold does. Weekly brushing of the hinge prevents most issues.
Cases that affect Pixel audio
Pixel's official cases (fabric and silicone) rarely cause muffling. Third-party cases sometimes do. Check:
- Speaker cutout aligned with the grille (a few millimeters off is enough to muffle audio)
- Fabric lining that sheds directly into the grille
- Case edges that extend over the earpiece slit
Pop the phone out of the case and test audio. If clean, the case is the issue.
Pixel-specific audio processing to know about
A few Pixel features affect speaker perception:
- Now Playing. Background music identification. Doesn't affect speaker output directly, but shows you what the phone thinks is playing — useful for diagnosis.
- Adaptive Sound. EQ adjustment based on ambient noise. Can over-correct in quiet rooms.
- Clear Calling. Voice enhancement on calls. Can mask or reveal ear-speaker issues depending on call conditions.
- Bluetooth audio codec switching. Pixel automatically picks between SBC, AAC, LDAC, and others. Wrong codec selection can make Bluetooth audio sound muffled independent of the main speaker.
When diagnosing, disable these one at a time rather than all at once. If disabling one brings back clean audio, you know that feature was the cause and can decide whether to keep it off or live with the trade-off.
a-series Pixel specifics
Pixel a-series (6a, 7a, 8a) have smaller speakers than the flagship line. The cleaning routine is the same but:
- Run shorter cleaning pulses (15 seconds instead of 20) because the smaller drivers heat faster.
- Expect more muffling from equivalent dust accumulation because the smaller drivers have less headroom.
- Don't run continuous cleaning tones for more than 30 seconds total per session.
Audio quality on a-series is genuinely smaller than flagship Pixels, so a slightly muffled a-series speaker can sound dramatically worse than a slightly muffled Pro. Clean regularly to keep it at its baseline.
The one-minute version
Pixel speakers benefit from both software and physical cleaning. Disable Adaptive Sound when diagnosing. Update the system firmware before assuming hardware damage, especially on Pixel 6 and 7. Use shorter cleaning tones than iPhone routines (20 seconds instead of 30) because the drivers heat faster. Water-eject is standard IP68 process.
Pixels that have been properly updated and properly cleaned rarely have real speaker problems. Most "Pixel speaker broken" complaints trace to either pending firmware or dust — fixable in about five minutes of work.
Frequently asked
Why does my Pixel 6 or 7 crackle?
add
Many Pixel 6 and 7 crackling complaints traced back to firmware stereo tuning rather than hardware. Update to the latest system version before assuming the speaker is damaged. If crackling persists after the update, clean the speaker and then retest.
Is Adaptive Sound hurting my Pixel audio?
add
Adaptive Sound adjusts EQ based on ambient noise. It can mask real speaker problems or cause audio to feel inconsistent. Turn it off temporarily when diagnosing muffled speakers or crackling.
Does the Pixel Fold have cleaning quirks?
add
The Pixel Fold collects debris along the hinge and around the inner display speaker. Open the phone fully before running a cleaning tone. The cover speaker cleans like a regular phone speaker.
