OnePlus Speaker Water Eject Guide (OnePlus 11 through OnePlus 13)

OnePlus phones have variable water resistance depending on the model. Here's what to do after water exposure — and what not to expect from IP54 vs IP68.

OnePlus has had a complicated history with water resistance. For years, unlocked OnePlus phones had no IP rating while carrier-specific versions (especially T-Mobile) had modest IP54 or IP64 ratings. That changed with the OnePlus 12, which shipped with IP65/IP68, and the OnePlus 13, which upgraded to IP68/IP69.

What this means practically: the cleaning and water-eject routine for a OnePlus 13 is essentially the same as an iPhone 15 Pro Max, while the same routine on an older unlocked OnePlus has real risk of making things worse.

Here's how to adjust based on which OnePlus you have.

Know your model's actual rating

OnePlus IP ratings by model:

  • OnePlus 11 (unlocked/international): No IP rating. Splash-resistant in practice, not submersion-resistant.
  • OnePlus 11 (T-Mobile): IP64 — dustproof, splash-resistant.
  • OnePlus 12: IP65/IP68 — dustproof and submersion-resistant.
  • OnePlus 13: IP68/IP69 — full dust and water protection including high-pressure jets.
  • OnePlus Nord 3 / 4: IP54. Dust and splash, not submersion.
  • OnePlus Open: IPX4. Splash only, not dust-resistant.

If you don't remember which OnePlus you have, check Settings → About device → Model number and cross-reference.

Cleaning routine for dust (all OnePlus)

Dust cleaning works the same regardless of water resistance:

  1. Brush the bottom speaker grille with a soft-bristle toothbrush, parallel to the slot.
  2. Hold the phone speaker-down over a towel.
  3. Play a 165Hz cleaning tone at max volume for 30 seconds.
  4. Wait a minute, test with a voice memo.

OnePlus phones typically have slightly brighter speaker tuning than Samsung or Pixel, which means dust-caused muffling is more obvious. Monthly cleaning keeps them at spec.

Water exposure: it depends on the model

This is where OnePlus differs dramatically from other Android phones. The right response depends on which OnePlus you have.

OnePlus 12 and 13 (IP68 class)

Treat the water-eject like you would on an iPhone:

  1. Wipe the phone dry with a lint-free cloth.
  2. Power off if it's on.
  3. Shake gently speaker-down to eject free water.
  4. Power back on and run a 165Hz eject pulse for 15 seconds.
  5. Wait 30 seconds, repeat two more times.
  6. Air dry for 24 hours, no charging.

The OnePlus 13 can survive high-pressure water exposure (IP69), but that doesn't mean water can't temporarily pool in the speaker cavity. Run the pulse regardless.

OnePlus 11 (IP64 or unrated)

If your phone has been more than lightly splashed, the risk is higher:

  1. Power off immediately.
  2. Shake speaker-down over a towel.
  3. Use a desiccant if available (silica gel packets, not rice).
  4. Do not run a water-eject pulse aggressively — the speaker gasket may not be intact.
  5. Air dry for 48 hours.
  6. Only then try powering on and testing audio.

Running a high-volume eject pulse on a phone without a reliable gasket can force water further into the device through marginal seals. Be conservative.

OnePlus Nord and older models

Splash-resistant only. Any water exposure beyond a small splash is risky:

  1. Power off immediately.
  2. Air dry for 72 hours minimum.
  3. If the phone still boots afterward and audio is clear, you got lucky.
  4. Consider any persistent muffling or crackling as early corrosion — book a repair sooner rather than later.

The OxygenOS audio quirks

OnePlus ships OxygenOS with several audio processing features that can affect speaker diagnostics:

  • 3D Audio (formerly Dolby Atmos on older versions): virtualizes surround from stereo. Can mask mono-speaker issues.
  • Dynamic range compression: adjusts loud/quiet ratios in media playback.
  • Equalizer presets: applied per app in many cases.

When diagnosing, turn them off:

Settings → Sound and vibration → Sound quality and effects → Turn off all enhancements

Test a voice memo. If audio is suddenly clear, your processing was too aggressive. If audio is still muffled, it's a physical cleaning problem.

Hasselblad camera app and audio

This is weirdly relevant: the Hasselblad-branded camera app on newer OnePlus phones records video audio through the bottom microphone, which sits near the speaker grille. Recording muffled-sounding audio can indicate grille debris affecting both the mic and the speaker.

If your OnePlus video audio sounds muffled during playback, the fix is often the same cleaning routine as for speaker audio. Brush the bottom edge, play a cleaning tone, retest.

Alert Slider (older models) and speakers

OnePlus phones through the 10 Pro had a physical alert slider. Sliding it between states affects audio routing in ways that occasionally cause speaker issues:

  • Muted position: some apps still play audio through the speaker at reduced volume, which can mask real speaker problems.
  • Ring position: full volume available.
  • Vibrate position: notifications vibrate; media still plays at full volume.

When diagnosing, keep the alert slider on Ring so you're testing at full capability.

Newer OnePlus models (12 and 13) replaced the slider with an action button. Same principle applies: check what mode it's set to before assuming a speaker problem.

OnePlus 13 cleaning specifics

The OnePlus 13 uses a larger speaker driver than the 12, tuned for slightly more bass response. Implications:

  • Muffling from dust is less obvious than on the 12 because the bass response masks it slightly.
  • Cleaning routines should run slightly longer (40 seconds instead of 30) because debris has more places to hide in the larger cavity.
  • Water-eject pulses are more effective because of the larger diaphragm excursion — often a single 15-second pulse is enough where you'd need three on older models.

When to stop and get service

OnePlus service is handled through OnePlus Care, and pricing varies significantly by region. Signs you need service rather than another cleaning:

  • Muffling persists after cleaning and 48 hours of drying on IP68 models
  • Any water damage on a non-IP68 OnePlus that continues muffling after 72 hours of drying
  • Physical damage to the speaker grille
  • Audio cutting in and out randomly (suggests internal contact corrosion)

OnePlus parts availability is better in Europe and Asia than in the US. Third-party repair is an option but usually breaks whatever water resistance the phone had.

The short version

Check your OnePlus model's actual IP rating before running a water-eject pulse — it's not a one-size-fits-all routine. Dust cleaning is identical across models: brush, 165Hz tone, voice memo test. OnePlus 12 and 13 can be treated like any IP68 phone; older unlocked OnePlus phones should get gentler handling.

Frequently asked

Is the OnePlus 11 water-resistant?

add

The OnePlus 11 has an IP64 rating on the T-Mobile variant and no IP rating on the unlocked/international version. It handles splashes and rain but is not designed for submersion.

What water resistance does the OnePlus 13 have?

add

The OnePlus 13 is rated IP68 and IP69, making it fully dustproof and able to handle high-pressure water jets. It's the most water-resistant OnePlus ever shipped.

Does OnePlus have a built-in water-eject tool?

add

OnePlus doesn't ship an official water-eject feature like Samsung does. Use a third-party cleaning tone or a web-based speaker cleaner for water-eject on OnePlus devices.
